Word Problem 8

Problem 8: If 20 men can eat 200 kgs of wheat in 40 days, then 10 men can eat 200 kgs of wheat in how many days?

a. 40 days          b. 20 days                  c. 80 days              d. 120 days

Solution:

This is an indirect proportion problem. Here if more men eat the wheat then less number of days it will finish ! So, one quantity (men) increases while other(days) decreases!

We suppose that 10 men will eat the wheat in ‘x’ days !

We arrange this data as under by putting arrows in opposite directions (because it is indirect proportion problem);

Now we write two fractions in which tail terms will be nominators and head terms will be denominators and put equal sign between these;

i-e

\frac{x}{40}=\frac{20}{10}

Solving for ‘x’ we get;

\Rightarrow x=\frac{20\times 40}{10}

\Rightarrow x=80

 

So, 10 men will finish the wheat in 80 days, hence option ‘d’ is correct answer
