Word Problem 16

Problem 16: A medical student has to secure 40% marks to pass. He gets 40 marks ans fails by 80 marks. The maximum marks are;

a. 500                b, 400               c. 200            d. 300

Marks calculation —

Solution:

We suppose total  marks are ‘x’

Since given that pass marks are 40% of total marks;

\Rightarrow Pass Marks = \frac{40}{100}x

But the student gets 40 marks and fails by 80 marks . This means he would have been passed had he got 80 more marks !

\Rightarrow Pass Marks = 40+80=120

\Rightarrow \frac{40}{100}x=120

\Rightarrow  x=\frac{100\times 120}{40} = 300

So, total marks are 300
