Word Problems 2

Problem 2: In what proportion must a grosser mix rice at Rs 1.2 per kg and Rs 1.44 per kg, so as to make the mixture worth Rs 1.26 per kg?

a) 18: 24         b) 1:3               c) 3:4                    d) 2:5

Solution:

Lets suppose the rice types be Rice1 and Rice2

Data can be arranged as under;

Now the price of mixture should be equale to sum of prices of both types separately;

i-e;

mixture price = price of Rice 1 + Price of Rice 2

\Rightarrow 1.26(y+z)=1.20y+1.44z

\Rightarrow 1.26y+1.26z=1.20y+1.44z

\Rightarrow 1.26y-1.20y=1.44z-1.26z

\Rightarrow 6y=18z

\Rightarrow \frac{1}{3}=\frac{z}{y}

\Rightarrow z:y=1:3

So the ratio should be 1:3

Problem 2 (Repeated with blend formula): In what proportion must a grosser mix rice at Rs 1.2 per kg and Rs 1.44 per kg, so as to make the mixture worth Rs 1.26 per kg?

a) 18: 24         b) 1:3               c) 3:4                    d) 2:5

Solution:

This problem can also be solved using ‘blending formula’;

In this method we write prices of both types on top ends of crossed pair of arrows , mixture at the crossing point and at other ends we take difference of both type prices from mixture price;. This is representing ratio of both, i-e

Ratio;

0.18:0.06

\Rightarrow 18:6

\Rightarrow 3:1

or;

1:3
