Arithmetic MCQ3 (Moving automobiles and time of meeting at a point)

MCQ3: Two automobiles are 150 kilometers apart and traveling toward each other. One automobile is moving at 60km/h and the other is moving at 40km/h mph. In how many hours will they meet?

a) 2.5                   b)  2.0               c)  1.75                 d) 1.5           e) 1.25

Solution:

We imagine automobiles as under

Since two automobiles are moving in the opposite directions – their speeds will be combined and hence relative speed will be sum of both automobile’s speeds !

i-e

Actual speed = 60+40 =100 km/hr

So, the distance of 150 km will be covered by this speed to get at meeting point.

We know;

$Distance= Speed \times Time$

or

$Time= \frac{Distance}{Speed}=\frac{150}{100}=1.5$

So the automobiles will take 1.5 hours to get together !-– option d is correct!
